How To Install a Cisco Wireless LAN Card

How To Install a Cisco Wireless LAN Card on a Pocket PC for direct connection to the LSE network.

This document describes how to configure a Pocket PC for direct connection to the LSE network using Cisco wireless LAN cards. Follow the instructions below if you are installing the driver for Cisco Aironet 340 series wireless LAN Adapter on your Windows CE 3.0 (ActiveSync) Pocket PC. Note that you have to follow the instructions How to establish a connection between a Pocket PC and a Windows 95/98/Me/2000 PC first if you have not already done so.

1. On your PC, download the appropriate driver (SA11xxPPC30v150.zip at the time of writing, and from http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/aironet-utils-ce30) for your wireless LAN adapter.

2. On your Pocket PC, tap Start, and then Settings. In the Settings menu, tap the System tab, tap the About icon, and finally tap the Device ID tab below. In the Device name text box, enter "T-" followed by your LSE username, followed by a dash, and finally by your device number (if you are connecting more than one device to the LSE network), e.g.

T-username-2 etc. Tap OK.

3. Connect your Pocket PC to a Windows 95/98 PC via a serial cable, USB cable, or infrared (Follow the instructions How to establish a connection between a Pocket PC and a Windows 95/98/Me/2000 PC first if you have not already done so).

4. Open the Windows Explorer to view the files on the Pocket PC device (i.e the folder called T-username-2 My Documents, Pocket_PC My Documents, My Pocket PC, or similar).

5. Drag and drop (or copy and paste) the downloaded file (e.g. SA11xxPPC30v150.zip) from the current location to the folder you located in step 3 above. You may have to carry out synchronisation before the file is actually transferred to the Pocket PC i.e. from the Active Sync menu on the Windows 95/98 PC, select File > Synchronise.

6. The file conversion window may appear indicating that some files may need to be converted, click OK.

7. After the file is copied, disconnect the Pocket PC.

8. On your Pocket PC, open the File Explorer (or Windows Explorer) and locate the file you copied in step 4 above.

9. Execute the file by double-clicking it. Some files are then copied automatically to the \Windows directory; Client utilities are also extracted to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs directory.

10. Insert the wireless adapter (with the logo facing up) into the PC card slot of the Pocket PC. The card is configured by the device and the green LED on the adapter should blink every two (2) seconds if you are within the range and if it is associated with the network. It blinks faster if it is not associated.

11. The Cisco Wireless adapter settings dialog box appears. Select Use server-assigned IP address and click OK.

12. Select Start > Programs > Cisco > Aironet Client Utility to open the Aironet Client Utility (ACU). Click OK.

13. Select Client Name under Property and enter t-username (t-followed by your LSE username). If this is a second device enter t-username-2.

14. Select SSID under Property and enter lsewireless.

15. Select Data Rates under property and make sure Auto is selected in the list of options in the Value dialog box.

16. Click OK.

The driver and client utility installation is complete.

17. Test your installation/signal strength by tapping the command Cisco Link Status from the Start > Programs > Cisco.
